I think that people naturally care about themselves first. It really depends on the person. You can't just say everyone thinks the same, but I think people tend to be more selfish. A great example is in the story "The Dangerous Game". In the story, Rainsford was selfish and didn't care about others, until he was hunted and was forced to think otherwise. He didn't care about what the animals he hunted felt.
Personally, I don't care about myself first, but I know a lot of people who do. I'm sure I did, a long time ago because I think people learn to share and care about others. I know people that when you ask them for a favor, they think twice about it and think of what's in it for them, or what could go wrong for them. If a friend asked me for a reasonable favor, I wouldn't think twice about it. Things like that tell you what kind of person they are.
